Cultural Caravan Program
CONSERVATORY ART APPRECIATION CLASS & MFA FIELD TRIP
The topics of the day are Spontaneity and Happy Accidents. And Susan Pennington will get the conversation going at her next art appreciation class, Abstract Expressionism, starting in January 2014 at the Conservatory. The class, with an optional companion excursion to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, was inspired by the museum’s upcoming exhibit, American Gestures. Pennington will discuss and show samples of this highly original style which dominated American Art in the 1940s and 1950s. Artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell favored inspiration from the subconscious and used their love of spontaneity and happy accidents to invent a new art language that triumphed internationally. Pennington has a Master’s degree in art history from the University of Wisconsin and has lead many classes with guided field trips under the Conservatory’s Cultural Caravan Program. Art enthusiasts can join the class, just go on the MFA group tour or sign up for both. Register

Music Memory for Adults
NAME THAT TUNE GETS A CLASSICAL TWIST
Now, you can listen to classical music, learn about the composers and help lead your team to victory in a fun name-that-tune style contest with the 41-piece Cape Cod Symphony Music Memory Orchestra! Pick your campus and become part of the heated [but friendly] rivalry between Falmouth and Barnstable. Stephanie Weaver, the Conservatory’s Managing Director, leads the Barnstable Team. George Scharr, Director of Community Education, heads Team Falmouth. They’re both professional educators; they’re both professional musicians. [And they both want to win!] The class is a fun way to mix people and music. For years, we've sponsored a similar program in the school system, so you'll also get to watch the kids compete firsthand and see why it’s one of the orchestra’s favorite gigs. Register
