Joshua Bell, “Classical Music Superstar”
Grammy® Award-winning violinist, Joshua Bell, has been captivating audiences worldwide with his poetic musicality for over two decades. He came to national attention at the age of 14 in a highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. A Carnegie Hall debut, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and a recording contract further confirmed his presence in the music world.
Now 40, Bell—who is known for his restless curiosity and multifaceted musical interests—has performed with the world’s leading symphony orchestras and conductors, recorded over 30 CDs, including the film soundtrack for The Red Violin, and participated in events foreign to most classical artists, earning him the rare title of “classical music superstar.” Last year he received the Avery Fisher Prize, regarded as one of the most significant awards for American instrumentalists.
A frequent guest on television shows, the focus of a music video and subject of a documentary film, Bell has also been profiled in publications ranging from Newsweek to Gramophone to the New York Times, which said of him: “Bell doesn’t stand in anyone’s shadow.” More about Joshua Bell
Bell’s Violin
Bell plays the Gibson ex Huberman violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1713. Its varnish gives the instrument a reddish color—something enjoyed by fans of Bell's work in the soundtrack to Francois Girard's 1998 film, The Red Violin. The instrument was stolen in 1936 at Carnegie Hall from violinist Bronislaw Huberman, was recovered in 1987 and was acquired by Bell for a reported $3.5 million in 2001. He recorded the aptly named Romance of the Violin CD playing this prized violin. His earlier Stradivarius was the 1732 Tom Taylor. More About the History of Joshua Bell’s Violin
