Christina and Michelle Naughton are the award-winning pianists who will join the Cape Symphony for Perfectly Paired on April 4 and 5. They’re also identical twin sisters!
Last spring, the Naughtons became the first piano duo to ever receive the Avery Fisher Career Grant, presented by Lincoln Center. After the announcement of the Grants at WQXR, New York City’s all-classical music station, the recipients performed. Watch this video to see Christina and Michelle Naughton play Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Piano (Four Hands).
Recipients of the Avery Fisher Career Grant are nominated by the Program's Recommendation Board, whose prestigious members include violinists Joshua Bell and Itzhak Perlman, chamber ensemble Kronos Quartet, and music director of the San Francisco Symphony Michael Tilson Thomas. The Recommendation Board and the Executive Committee, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax, select the most talented musicians whom they believe have the greatest potential for major careers.
Shortly after receiving the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Christina and Michelle performed the Poulenc piece again, this time at the Kennedy Center. Grace Jean, classical music reviewer for the Washington Post, said that “the twin sisters — who recently became the first piano duo recipients of Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grants — are each talented musicians in their own right yet when together become a perfect storm.” Jean says, “This duo has become known for its synchronous technique and musicality. Another hallmark is their aching lyricism, phrases pouring from their fingers as smooth as fondant.”
After Christina and Michelle performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Sing Tao Daily said, ”Joining two hearts and four hands at two grand pianos, the Naughton sisters created an electrifying and moving musical performance.”
We are excited to have these extraordinarily talented young women come to Cape Cod. They will perform another piece by Francis Poulenc, his “Concerto for Two Pianos.” To learn more about the music that will be played at Perfectly Paired, and to see other videos of the Naughton sisters, visit the Listening Links page.
