The Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra is now accepting new student auditions for the spring semester. The CSYO is a full symphonic orchestra designed for our community’s most advanced and dedicated young musicians.
Mark Miller, Principal Clarinet with the Cape Symphony, became the Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra Music Director and Conductor in September 2019. On January 18, 2020 at Heritage Gardens in Sandwich, the CSYO gave their first concert with Mark, a concert that was full of enthusiasm and promise for the future of the group. Little did anyone know that in March 2020, everything would change.
The CSYO quickly moved to meeting online and has continued to do so ever since. For the first hour of their Zoom Saturdays, the students spend some time working on basic music theory, but a lot more time exploring the history and structure of orchestral music, looking at scores, and listening to performances.
In the second hour, the group breaks into section rehearsals led by some outstanding Cape Symphony musicians, including Principal Oboe Emerita Elizabeth Doriss, Principal Trumpet Kyle Spraker, and Principal Horn Clark Matthews, as well as strings coach David Gable. The students have also performed in masterclasses with Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee and Principal Flute Zach Sheets.
The CSYO will continue to meet online through the spring. Download the audition information. Students are urged to submit their audition videos before the first rehearsal of the new semester on February 6th, but late submissions will be accepted and reviewed.
Thanks to the generous support of the Bilezikian Family Foundation and the Hermann Foundation, participation in the CSYO is free to any student taking another class or lessons of equal or greater value with the Cape Symphony.
