The Land of the Midnight Sun

July 5 – 19, 2018

Every year, Joan Hill of Artful Journeys creates a magical trip to compliment Cape Symphony’s Passport Series concert. This year’s Passport to Scandinavia concert will be followed in July 2018 by a trip to Scandinavia, when it will be warm and light for many hours each day. You might want to bring an eye mask so that you can get some zzzzzzzz’s!

We will arrive in Bergen, the quaint coastal town on the southwestern tip of Norway. Here you can unwind from the flight and taste fresh fish from the day’s catch, delicious strawberries dripping juices onto your chin and some Norwegian sweets – maybe some mouthwatering waffles with homemade jam. We will stay in Bergen two nights, long enough to stretch your legs, relax, walk among the colorful houses and attend a noontime concert at the Grieg museum.

From Bergen we will take a Hurtigruten mail/tour boat to the Lofoten islands. This is a three-day trip, to introduce you to Scandinavia’s oldest resource, molding people’s livelihood and lifestyle: water. Water is everywhere in this part of the world and provides the basis for many industries, including fishing, power and tourism.

In the Lofoten islands, we can enjoy music, boating and fishing, if you’d like. We might even be greeted by Northern Lights some evenings. The Lofoten Chamber Music Festival is Norway’s most famous summer classical event.

After staying on the islands for three days, we will amble to Oslo, Norway’s capital, where a show piece of Norway’s wealth is the new opera building. In Oslo, we’ll experience the urban life of the world’s happiest nation. We will also visit some fine institutions: the Edvard Munch (Norway’s most famous artist) museum and Vigeland Park.

Joining this adventure will be Joan’s cousin, Trond Langvik, resident of Fredrikstad, Norway.

The cost of this two-week journey is $6,175 double occupancy, which includes all accommodations, most meals, fishing, concerts, transfers and transportation within Scandinavia and administration fees. Also included in this cost is a $500 tax-deductible contribution (from the traveler) to the CSO. Single supplement is approximately $1,550.
