Playing with Fire
SEPTEMBER 21, 2013 at 8PM
SEPTEMBER 22, 2013 at 3PM

Music ignites the fire within. In 1958, a soft-spoken Texan named Van Cliburn won Russia’s first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. He played like an immortal and somehow helped thaw the Cold War. In 1997, Jon Nakamatsu, the undisputed underdog, had one last shot at the now-famous Van Cliburn Competition. He chose a piece many pianists fear, played with undeniable fire and seized the Gold. For the first time on our stage, you’ll hear the inventive, fiery music that changed his life forever.

You’ll also hear the granddaddy of science fiction music. Holst has packed an epic into this big, bold, imaginative piece filled with heroes, villains, mystics and magicians. There’s spine-chilling action and places to drift and dream among the stars. To fuel the fire, we’ve added a sequel. Don’t miss the world premiere of two movements: Pluto & Apollo.
