Cape Cod Symphony Youth Orchestra
Make Music, Make Friends, Make Memories
Seize the Opportunity
This new program allows talented young musicians of all ages and skill levels to perform symphonic music under the direction of professional conductors, musicians and educators. It is designed to bring an additional, high caliber educational/performance opportunity to the Cape Cod and Islands communities and is offered by the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (CCSO) and Cape Cod Conservatory of Music & Arts (CCCMA).
Move Forward Musically
There are two sections: a Preparatory Level and the Youth Orchestra. Students will be placed in the most age- and experience-appropriate ensemble. There is also an opportunity for advanced musicians to participate in an Honors Ensemble. These students will serve as featured performers, mentors to other musicians and assistants to the Music Director. They attend all rehearsals and performances and occasionally represent the orchestra as a small “touring” performance group within the community. The tuition fee is waived for members of the Honors Ensemble.
Expand Your Repertoire
Musicians in both sections will experience a diverse and exciting repertoire in rehearsals and performances throughout the academic year. Playing in an orchestra helps develop a style of ensemble playing that is technically and musically sensitive and mature. In addition, musicians build important life-skills: discipline, commitment, responsibility, teamwork and respect for others, among others. They also gain confidence and poise.
In addition to giving students access to a cadre of resident and visiting professionals, the Program offers unique experiences that advance their musical training. CCSO Musicians and visiting artists teach workshops and master classes. Students are also invited to observe, and sometimes participate in, CCSO Master Classes. They can also attend selected CCSO rehearsals and receive a 50% discount on all concert tickets.
Share Incredible Experiences
Even though the bar is set high for young musicians to strive toward an advanced level of playing, we believe the journey must be as incredible as the destination. We want musicians to experience the joy of playing an instrument, collaborating with others and sharing the music they create with an audience. The Cape Cod Symphony Youth Orchestra is a place where young people develop lasting friendships and have incredible experiences they’ll never forget.
Program Leadership
Joan Landry, Music Director & Conductor, is also Associate Conductor of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. She is an accomplished musician and experienced conductor, a rare gem among youth orchestra leadership. She has served as Assistant Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony, conducting 50 concerts per season, and Associate Conductor for the Honolulu Symphony, where she designed and conducted education concerts for over 100,000 students on Oahu. Landry earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and both a Masters Degree and Artists Diploma from The Hartt School in Connecticut for Orchestral Conducting. She has guest-conducted the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and Springfield Symphony and served as Cover-Conductor with the Boston Pops.
