Talented middle and high school students are invited to audition for placement in the newly combined Youth Ensemble, comprised of brass, string and woodwind musicians. Selected students then rehearse and perform with CCSO musicians as their teachers/leaders and ultimately represent their respective high schools as well as the CCSO at a year-end concert.
History of the Ensemble
In 2005-06, the CCSO formed four student ensembles—three woodwind (Barnstable High School) and one brass (Dennis-Yarmouth High School). The following year, these ensembles continued to rehearse and perform. In the fall of 2007, in order to provide opportunities for more secondary school students, three larger Cape-wide ensembles were formed, each led by a CCSO musician. Students from across the Cape auditioned for seats in early November, and just after Thanksgiving, the three ensembles began rehearsing weekly at Barnstable High School. This process repeated for the 2008-09 season.
The CCSO’s goal of attracting young musicians Cape-wide was achieved with the participation of students from Barnstable, Bourne, Dennis-Yarmouth, Falmouth, Nauset and Sandwich public schools, as well as from Cape Cod Academy and Falmouth Academy. The Youth Ensembles have represented the CCSO publicly at various venues including the Cape Cod Community College Academy of Lifelong Learning, the Dennis-Yarmouth Aviation Expo and the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
Joint concerts were held each May culminating their respective seasons.
Youth Ensemble – All Orchestral Instruments 2009/10
New in 2009/10, the ensembles will combine into one chamber group (of all orchestral instruments) and there is a $150 fee for participation. We are looking for intermediate and advanced level instrumentalists who play strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The audition registration deadline is October 12, 2009. Individual auditions will be scheduled Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22, 2009, with possible make-ups on October 29th. Please contact Karen Rauss, Education Coordinator, at karenccso@comcast.net to register for an audition.
Students who participated in the Youth Ensembles during the 2008/09 season are automatically accepted for 2009/10, but must audition for seating.
Youth Ensembles will rehearse on Thursday evenings, beginning on November 12, 2009.
The final Youth Ensemble concert will be held the evening of May 14, 2010 (location to be announced).
