Cape Symphony Presents Fabiola Méndez Trio in June 2023

Cape Symphony Presents: Fabiola Méndez Trio

Cape Symphony Presents Fabiola Méndez on Thursday, June 15 at 7:00 PM at Wellfleet Preservation Hall and the Fabiola Méndez Trio on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 PM at the Cape Symphony Falmouth Campus.

Fabiola Mendez is a Puerto Rican cuatro player, educator, and composer that has taken part in a musical movement, crossing over the lines of genres such as folkloric, jazz & Latin. Fabiola’s cuatro is complemented by the smooth bass lines of Juan Maldonado and the lively güiro and multi-percussion rhythms of Miguel Martínez, communicating the pride and beauty of the Jíbaro & African roots in Puerto Rican culture.

Fabiola's musicality and original compositions take the listener on a journey through her identities and culture, while celebrating and exploring the versatility of the Puerto Rican cuatro, a 5-double string guitar traditional to PR. Recognized for being the first student to graduate from Berklee College of Music with the cuatro as principal instrument. Fabiola performs nationally and internationally, and works as a composer for children's shows Alma's Way (PBS Kids) and Sesame Street's Mecha Builders (HBO Max). She has received numerous awards, including the Quincy Jones Award for composition, WBUR's ARTery 25, the Brother Thomas Fellowship, Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship, ASCAP Lucille and Jack Yellen Award 2022, and a motion from the Puerto Rican House of Representatives for her work and accomplishments as a cuatrista.

Bass player Juan Maldonado is an educator, producer, composer, studio engineer and performer appearing in events such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, BeanTown Jazz Festival, Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, Sarasota Jazz Festival, and Heineken Jazz Festival, among others. In 2014, Juan was awarded the Berklee Urban Service Award for his outstanding work with youth in Boston and selected as a chair for Boston Creates--a community-wide effort to harness creativity and build a shared vision for arts and culture in Boston. Juan is a Berklee College of Music alumni and the owner and founder of JM Studio Productions, a music school and recording studio serving Boston residents and surrounding cities. Juan is also the program director at Sociedad Latina, a youth development organization based in Mission Hill with a mission to create the next generation of Latino leaders.

Percussionist Miguel Martínez is one of the most esteemed percussionists in the music scene of Boston today. Miguel is an experienced percussionist in many styles, such as world music, R&B, Latin, and other genres, especially folk music from Puerto Rico. His professional experiences have given him the opportunity to share the stage with legendary performers such as Jerry Rivera, Andy Montañez, Ismael Miranda, Tony Vega, Jose Alberto, and “El Canario,” just to name a few. Miguel is currently a member of "Puchi Colon & Salsa Praise," a ten-piece band based out of the east coast, as well as the The Eguie Castrillo Palladium Orchestra.”
