The CSYOP Mentorship Initiative aims to cultivate a nurturing learning environment where young musicians are supported and encouraged by their peers. Just as guest musicians from the Cape Symphony Orchestra often work with members of CSYO, members of CSYO and other senior ensembles will be invited to sit side-by-side with members of our junior ensembles, offering guidance, support, and inspiration. Through this initiative, we hope to create a lasting impact on both mentors and mentees, fostering a love for music and the community it creates.
Mentor Expectations:
- Collaborate with Coordinators/Conductors to create an agreeable schedule for the ensemble they have been chosen to mentor.
- Attend all previously agreed upon rehearsals, consistently and on time, communicating absences directly to Coordinator/Conductor as early as possible.
- Rehearse side-by-side with their mentor ensemble and may be asked to perform with them at CSYOP Concerts (in addition to their current ensemble).
- Serve as a role model in terms of musicianship, practice habits, and concert etiquette.
- Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
- Familiarize themselves with the music and parts of their mentor ensemble.
- Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement to younger musicians.
- Occasionally be asked to demonstrate a musical passage or relevant technique.
- Be open to feedback and continuously seek to improve their mentoring skills.
Mentors will be invited to participate by their respective Coordinators. Participation is highly encouraged, but not required.
