Cape Symphony Orchestra Presents "Passport to Vienna"

Awadagin Pratt will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23

WEST BARNSTABLE, MA—December 29, 2025

The Cape Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to present Passport to Vienna on January 24 and 25, 2026 at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center. Music Director Alyssa Wang will conduct a program of Viennese genius spanning centuries, featuring music by Arnold Shoenberg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Known for her genuine and enthusiastic connection with audiences, Alyssa Wang made her debut as Cape Symphony’s Music Director at the Orchestra’s Holiday CapePOPS! concerts. Passport to Vienna will be the first classical concert she will conduct in that role.

The concert will open with Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2, which was first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1940 by the New Friends of Music Orchestra.

Prizewinning guest artist Awadagin Pratt, hailed by WGBH as “one of the great and distinctive American pianists and conductors of our time,” joins the Orchestra to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major. Pratt has appeared with the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras, the New York Philharmonic, and many others, and performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and on Sesame Street. He is Principal Conductor of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra.

After an intermission, the Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s celebrated Symphony No. 7 in A Major, which premiered to wild enthusiasm at the University of Vienna in 1813. It has endured as one of his most successful and popular works; Beethoven himself called it his “most excellent symphony.”

Passport to Vienna will be presented Saturday, January 24 at 4:00 PM and Sunday, January 25 at 3:00 PM at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis. Ticketholders are invited to a talk about the concert program by retired Cape Symphony trombonist and scholar George Scharr one hour before each performance.
