Matthew Hutchinson has been playing piano, keyboards, and Hammond organ professionally for more than 30 years. He regularly performs solo, as well as with jazz ensembles, in various bands around the region, in theatre productions, and as an accompanist.
Matthew views mentorship as an extension of his artistry. He is passionate about a wide variety of musical genres and strives to help students develop the necessary musical language to express their unique voice through the piano.
The study of jazz, and improvisation in particular, is a study of language, history and culture. Matthew aims to ensure that each student has the tools to communicate with their instruments, understand the music’s traditions, and discover their own voice. Adapting to each student’s learning style and interests, he creates ways to impart the fundamental elements of jazz and improvisation while encouraging the student’s own creativity and self-discovery. Fundamental topics include ear training, harmony, rhythm, chord structures, and paying off a lead sheet.
Matthew relocated to Cape Cod after living and working for many years in New York City and Berlin, Germany. He has performed internationally in eight different countries. He also spent many summers performing on Nantucket. He earned his BA in Music from Bennington College and studied music improvisation at the New School Jazz program in New York.
